UNPARALLELED EXCELLENCE FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS

First Coast Rowing Club began as Stanton Rowing in 1990 when students approached two Stanton College Preparatory School biology teachers (Steve Hitchcock, who rowed and coached at Jacksonville University, and Tess Durant) to ask if they would start a rowing team.  Since that time, our founders have inspired the team's rowers to compete at the highest levels.

The Early Years

During the summer of 1990, parents and rowers worked with the coaches to repair the program’s first boats, acquired by parents on a weekend road trip to Atlantic City, NJ. These wooden boats were in poor condition, dating from the early 1970s and 1980s, but they were rowed with pride that fall in Stanton’s first race, the 1990 First Coast Head Race, now Florida's oldest head race. In 1993, the Duval County School Board's approval of Crew as a Varsity Sport at Stanton came with the proviso that the school board would not provide any direct financial support. in response, the coaches, rowers and parents established The Stanton Rowing Foundation entirely through volunteer efforts.

The club's first home, a lean-to at Jacksonville University on the St Johns River, was built by parents and rowers in 1990. In 1996, with the help of the City of Jacksonville, the foundation purchased a rowing location at River Bank Court near the mouth of the Arlington River. From its inception, athletes from other schools requested to participate. To attend to this community need, a separate team (River Bank Rowing) was established. In the fall of 2010, Stanton-River Bank Rowing (SRB) moved to its new site at 645 Cesery Boulevard, on the quieter waters of the Pottsburg Creek side of the Arlington River.

Today

In 2017 Stanton Rowing and River Bank Rowing fully merged and now row under the name First Coast Rowing Club. First Coast Rowing is open to any interested middle or high school student. We also offer use of our facility and equipment for masters rowers.

After our humble beginnings with wooden boats and oars, we now have a fleet of competition-grade shells and carbon oars; thanks to the hard work and generosity of our parents and donors. Our fleet is comprised of a variety of shells (6 eights, 4 fours, 4 quads, 12 pair/doubles, 2 doubles and 4 singles), four wake-less launches and a floating dock. We have dressing rooms and bathrooms, a training room with 20 ergs and indoor storage for our top boats.

Over the years, our crews have won more than 100 State Championships and five National titles. Rowers from our program have participated in gold medal wins at the Junior World Rowing Championships as part of the US Junior National Team and an alumnus raced and won in the collegiate division of the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England. Many of our rowers go on to row in college, some with full scholarships, and several continue in the sport as coaches at the high school and collegiate levels.

College coaches continue to seek out rowers from First Coast Rowing Club because of their technical grounding and work ethic. Several have been awarded rowing scholarships at Stanford, Duke, University of Virginia, University of Michigan, University of Tennessee, University of Alabama, Clemson, Florida Tech, Syracuse, Mercyhurst, Jacksonville University and Stetson. Our athletes have also continued their rowing careers at such prestigious schools as the Naval Academy, MIT, Georgia Tech, Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown, Wellesley and West Point.
